The Daily Cycle of Unresolved Trauma: Healing is Possible

When someone experiences trauma, they can sometimes feel “disconnected from their body,” which is a phenomenon called dissociation, where the mind essentially disengages from physical sensations as a protective mechanism to cope with overwhelming emotional pain, often leading to a feeling of detachment from one’s own body and reality; this can manifest as numbness, a lack of awareness of bodily sensations, or even feeling like an outside observer of one’s own experiences.

Key points about trauma and body disconnection:

Survival mechanism:

Dissociation acts as a survival strategy, allowing the brain to temporarily "shut down" to avoid the full impact of a traumatic event, especially when escape isn't possible.

Symptoms:

Feeling detached from one's body, emotional numbness, reduced awareness of physical sensations, feeling like you're "not really there," or experiencing a sense of unreality.

Impact on daily life:

Body disconnection can significantly impair daily functioning, as individuals may struggle to perceive their own needs, manage pain, or engage fully with their environment.

Depersonalization:

A specific type of dissociation where one feels detached from their own body or mind.

Derealization:

Feeling disconnected from one's surroundings, making the world seem unreal.

How to address address trauma and begin to heal:

There are tools available that can help you process your trauma, find peace and not let it take over your life. This doesn’t mean you can “just get over” your trauma. Instead, it means facing it head-on, being kind to yourself and forging a new path.

Therapy:

Seeking professional help from a therapist specializing in trauma can be crucial for processing traumatic experiences and reconnecting with the body.

Mindfulness practices:

Techniques like deep breathing, grounding exercises, and body scanning can help bring awareness back to physical sensations.

Somatic therapies:

Therapies that specifically focus on body awareness and movement, like yoga or dance therapy, can assist in reconnecting with physical sensations.
